Massive Attack – Heligoland ‘Had not so much confidence for this album after the not satisfying 100th Window. Not a bad album, an overkill of bleeps and a lack of real blood stream, and…no Massive vibe (too much Del Naja). Now the veins can be filled again with the drug called Massive Attack. Though they will never return to the point of where they got my Unfinished Sympathy and my unlimited Protection…. (and i should not have teardrops but be thankful for what we’ve got)… there will be no better things anymore… it’s 2010! They make such an unique music which feels like a drug being stuck in you like a needle from a bee with their dreamy, neurotic and spacy tunes.You need a headphone, a volume knob and much time with Massive Attack. Since most of their songs are not love in first degree, not the ones you embrace in the wink of an eye…. but after a few ‘turntable’ plays (and some extra remixes on the Deluxe edition in I Tunes store) there is that Massive feeling again, that Better things, that visionairy PARADISE CIRCUS!! (best tracks are Splitting the Atom, Paradise Circus (also the Gui Boratto remix), Girl I love You (she is danger remix), Flat of the blade (‘classic’ headphone drug) and Atlas Air (which was better threatning LIVE in HMH Amsterdam) The artwork is brilliant…. guys: you make it hard to resist again, so…. i give up, give me more!
I know, i am a longtime fan, so my advice: don’t believe the writing, put on a headphone and judge it yourself….
And there he was! The tiny man from England with 12 Million albums sold worldwide without ONE single hit or gold album in Holland…. (his Greatest hits would be the 1st one i guess) in a sold out venue (Vredenburg Utrecht). What a melancholic but most of all very melodious night it was! His lyrics hardly bring any news on the subject love, but his performance and voice do. If you listen close, you hear a torn up man who cries out (raw and)loud. Just a few songs are the lovesongs that fit in the concept of a top40 lovesong, “If you want it, come and get it……crying out loud“. Most of his songs are a surround sound with some melodramatic lyrics, cruelty with such a sincere voice…. just close your eyes and fall in love with his songs. Some of the melodies remind me of the best Deacon Blue and Prefab Sprout songs…. The crowd (me too) just loved him. While the band was perfect and the 2nd voice amazing… It was the energy, love… but most of all the simple love melodies sung by this great singer that moved the audience. With more than hundred songs to choose from he picked real good ones like “Babylon, Ain’t no love, The Other side, First Change, Alibi, Slow Motion” (that 2nd voice) and the Sing along encore (but classic popsong and my favourite) : This years love! And when he performed Strange Fruit (the Billie Holiday standard, also known by Diana Ross from the movie Lady sings the blues) it was difficult not to be moved!!
I was more than amazed and it pleased me (though i like his ballads best) with his performance and show, though nothing special happened on stage. He (with the band) was the act and show. He is just 41 (and from Manchester… which has a large history in giants of Pop music )and with his carreer he made a bigger mark than i knew two years ago (and he’s recording already nearly 20 years). Will he stay a secret to most in Holland? Not to his fans yesterday and i agree: 3500 fans -for an ‘unknown’ singer- cannot be wrong!
Funny sometimes, always intimate, and that energy!
Naturally some songs from his latest and also acclaimed album Draw the Line, on which he can be proud too! It’s just the way he should sound: raw and intimate, with sometimes a little cynical, a bit painfull… sometimes in love, but always true and intense! Thanks to people like him i also dig real pop & rock music (Otherwise it would be Soul, jazz, funk and RnB, reggae and ska, dance, disco, trip hop, dub, lounge, techno, minimal, and singer/songwriters all the time!) Ron.
Joss…. needs lovin’ twice a day (she sings) … It seems she needs a whole lot more love from the audience last monday… (asking for yell’s , vibe, claps, yeah’s etc.) Her only problem stays that she is such a young girl, acting a bit like a teenager (now she’s a massive tea drinker on stage it seems, inbetween songs?!) with a voice that reminds me of the darkest, best soul singers ever (people like Aretha and Chaka) because when she sings!!!!! Her voice is so powerful and full of soul, that you just have to close your eyes and you enjoy a set of superior SOUL!! She did a surprisingly good set of uncommon songs (Less is more, What are we gonne do now) and also hits like Super duper love and Tell me about it. She was in a good mood by performing especially for one person in the audience “Bruised, but not broken” and a stunning version from already classic soulsong “Could have been you” (which she wrote when she was 15 she said…Well, that’s genius work). Her last songs on stage were The Chokin’ kind and Big ol’ game (again, with Raphael Saadiq on the record) and allthough it’s a great song… it’s not the best song to end a show… it’s just not powerful enough, though worth a top 10. Pleased to play her record again, when i got home because she is very, very talented. also live, but…. she’s just a very young happy girl with a very mature, sometimes sad and powerful soul sound… it still puzzles me.
Joss Stone weet met soul, stem, show én emotie te overtuigen in Paradiso waar ze met verrassende keuzes ( less is more, what are we gonne do now ) en hits het publiek uitstekend weet te vermaken. Haar absolute prijsnummer ‘ could have been you’ kon natuurlijk niet ontbreken en die vlamde er net als chokin’ kind uit! Jammer dat ‘ big ol game’ als afsluiter kwam want een prachtnummer maar geen feest of intens einde nummer. Het enige wat me blijft storen is dat het hele vrolijke, soms giechelende meisje zo’n doorleefde soul zingt, waardoor de geloofwaardigheid soms weg lijkt. Maarrr het wordt al beter. In de HMH vorige keer was ze nog een puber, nu al een jonge vrouw. Een met een dijk van een soulstem.
She was by far the best singer in the X-factor series. She made an album that meets high standards in poppy soul songs with large Motown, retro 60’s and phil spector tunes, though very commercial (which most great Dusty Springfield albums were too) and all the songs linger through your head all day after you’ve listened them a few times.
But… How would that sound live after a disappointing live show from her Idols colleque Nikki (great voice, no show, never brilliant)?? and after a dozen TV shows…for a not so critical audience then, for INSTANCE Paradiso??!!?? Well: it sounded GREAT!
With a band of 10 people, where the horns, keyboard, background singers were very very good and the guiters have to learn a bit but she…. the shy singer LISA LOIS was the best! Nervous but not forgetting a word, shy but screaming out her emotions in the best songs from her album ‘Smoke’. Hitting all notes and ad-lips in the best songs from her album : Watching you (cold shoulder meets massive attack soul note), Promises, the classic song Smoke, never enough for you, the hurricane song ‘i owe it all to you’, and strong ballad ‘i know who i am’ and her Winehousesque ‘It ain’t right’. A few covers from people like Paloma Faith, Nicki Costa and black butta from another rockin’ soul singer ……. It all seemed right with her giant live band giving a blast, a real wall of sound and a few thrilling ballads, but mostly a soul show with an attitude that measure’s the biggest singers from this decade. It would be right for her to be discovered in the UK ánd the USA.
Let’s start with a slow song and later a few top 10 hits that rock a little soulish! She can sing them all, with a voice that is strong enough to keep you addicted!
Singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini (1987) has a voice which doesn’t rhyme with his age, 22 years. Breathtaking performances full of soul with raw elements on the friday concert in Paradiso. Composed mostly by the young guy himself, in all genres he likes. NO bounderies… i like that, no, I LOVE that!! It’s from folk to jazzy, from pop to rock that has a breath of Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens and even Simon and Garfunkel a bit… but always original and not copying. Also a whole lotta soul that you only could compare with the strength of Otis Redding. Songs from both his albums and three new songs …they were all fun to listen to and more than enjoying to watch with his true performing religion on stage! What a great talent. In nothing a star, in everything a pure artist… . He’s a half Scottish, half Italian (nowhere arrogance here) small boy Nutini, who is a musician and performer without an attitude, just GOOD and a lot of feel good and heartbreak songs with sometimes a great singalong line…and soul with a capital S. One of my best concerts this year!
With highlights like No other way, Jenny don’t be hasty, Loving You, Last Request, the opening song 10/10 that’s a brilliant vibrant reggea tune, which is so totally different than Growing up beside You or the terribly funny (but not my favourite) Pencil full of lead and intimate Tricks of the trade… he brews it into a melting pot that seems so natural that you love all the styles at the end of the concert! It’s a remarkable show, no special effects, no fuss, but so beautiful that i know that John Martyn and Otis Redding have a brother here on earth, his name is paolo Nutini. And that his music is not to be caught in just one cage, doesn’t mean that it isn’t SOUL. a 19 (GREAT SONGS AND PERFORMANCE!) out of 21 (total performances) score in paradiso!!

PS let’s not forget the opening act ROBERT FRANCIS!!! He played a very good set (twice…), with one of my favourites Dakota, Do what i can and the very good song for a single (which should mean the Breakthrough to a bigger aufdience for him) One by One… A smashing pop song, in a quality which Oasis doesn’t make them anymore…
His fisrt performance downstairs in paradiso was good, but his act and show after 11 PM was even better upstairs in the small venue from paradiso! so checked him out too, and glad Juul and i did that, great energy, great songs and a vvoice that’s sometimes like no other and the next song you hear sparks from Leonard Cohen, Radiohead, and even Rufus Wainwright sometimes!! A double Whammy for us in Paradiso.
And… singers that like animals… are better humans!
If there is ONE thing about MASIVE ATTACK, it’s the ultimate threat and desire in a song, in nearly every song….
Yesterday (27 october 2009) in the Heineken Music Hall, again. Ever since i discovered Massive Attack (and that was in their very “Massive” beginnings), they impressed me with their sound and unusual combination of vocal triphop, drum n Bass, rock, dub, reggae, soul and a whole lotta soundscapes, which sound like a soundtrack sometimes, but mostly like a tale, which have strong lyrics and a ominous message. That’s what it is with Massive Attack. There is LOVE, but nowhere without a warning or a fear. there is freedom but it comes with a struggle, peace after a powerful storm and a smile or even happiness sometimes, but it must feel as a relief after pain. Massive Attack’s music, message, structure of songs and performances are not easy…. more strongly still: they’re heavy. But with that power, that hard rocking ultimate endings with an open end, that scary light…. and the perfection… make their concerts an unforgettable experience!
The setlist was (for me) nearly perfect, allthough i don’t understand why the also FANTASIC 2nd album Protection (with great tracks like Protection, Better Things, Sly, Weather storm) is boycotted by them live except for Karma Korma always…. This show was a mixture from at least 5 new tracks (of which the Single Splitting the Atom is Superb, also LIVE!) including Psyche and (nearly) all the other songs you want to hear from them LIVE. Yes, Unfinished Sympathy in a warm version (see youtubemovie), Teardrop gracefully sung by Martina Topley Bird (also Psyche!!), static versions of Future Proof and Mezzanine, hard noise in Inertia Creeps and hypnotic sounds and spheres in Risingson, AntiStar (what a great track) and the beloved songs Angel (with Horace Andy naturally) and Karma Korma…
Not the sereen songs from 100th Window (with the breakable voice from Sinead O Connor) are performed, Nicolette, Tracey Thorn, Madonna, Shara Nelson, Tricky are names that worked with Massive Attack so far, now Tunde Adepimpe (from TV on the radio), Guy Garvey (from Elbow) and most likely Grace Jones (also seen backstage during this tour…) are joinin’ up with Martina Topley Bird for the new album…..
Massive Attack is a rare -not a rock band- collection of two men (Grant Marchall Daddy G and Robert Del Naja 3D) with a true own sound, not typical Trip hop act or any other musical ‘label’, not a show band and especially not a single act, so these precious moments LIVE, when all the strength from their creativty comes together… is still buzzing through my head! I am waiting, with fear and desire for their new album. The first impression from the upcoming album with their new EP is overwhelming… like this concert was. One of my all time favourite bands.
Diana Ross in the long awaited Symphonica in Rosso show!!! (English review below)
Je kunt veel van Diana Ross zeggen (niet de grootste soul zangeres… veel vertoon, misschien niet de beste stem)…. maar met haar 65 jaar en haar verleden zet ze een strakke show neer in het Arnhemse gelderdome vol hits en het voor haar bekende Diva gedrag, compleet met verkleedpartijen en het warme meezing gevoel wat haar muziek zo onweerstaanbaar maakt. Diana Ross was ooit het meisje met de grote ogen van de Supremes… het meisje waar Berry Gordy (motownbaas) voor viel en die haar op een voetstuk plaatste. Hij moet toen al gezien hebben dat Diana in staat was om veel meer van haar carriere te maken, dan alle Martha’s (Reeves & Vandellas) en Mary’s (Weiss van Shangri La’s) van de hele wereld samen… En dat deed ze. Met alle pijnlijke scheidingen, de ruzies met producers en collega’s (met Marvin Gaye was de band verre van perfect ondanks het “You are everything” en Shirley Bassey had ze het liefst “Eaten Alive”), ziektes, drankproblemen, maar ook als prachtig fotomodel voor duizenden camera’s, actrice (o.a. goede rol in Lady sings the blues!!), liefhebbende moeder én vriendin van Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson en een hart wat altijd openging als de DIVA de aandacht kreeg die bij haar pastte… Ze is waarschijnlijk Soul’s grootste levende STER, anders dan een Queen van stem in de Soul want dan komen Aretha, Mary J, Patti, Gladys en soms (als ze niet doorslaat) Chaka waarschijnlijk dichterbij.
Alain Clark mocht het Gelderdome opwarmen… dat lukte gedeeltelijk en je kon zien dat hij relaxed over wilde komen maar niet leek te zijn. Als je dan naar de 40 seconden kijkt van de leermeester in duet met Diana, dan snap ik waarom Diana in Reach out and Touch Alain maar een heel klein rolletje gaf…
Diana Ross is een legende. En een legende mag in het jaar dat haar oudste platenlabel MOTOWN 50 jaar wordt, gerust eens een concert met klassiekers doen in een bijna bomvol Gelderdome. Hoewel het podium en lichtshow prachtig zijn gestyled draait het natuurlijk maar om één vrouw: de Diva Diana. Maar liefst 5 keer een andere jurk, want het publiek moet vooral niet denken dat er een tekort is aan textiel of creaties die allen op het (iets vollere) lichaam schitteren van de Ster.

Gelukkig heeft de Ster alle tijd voor klassiekers als “Stop! in the name of love” , wat nooit verveeld overigens omdat het een all time classic is zoals uh.. ” Valerie” dat ook zal blijken te zijn. Maar ook een geweldige aangepaste latin versie van een van de mooiste nummers van haar ooit (LOVE CHILD) werd haarzuiver gezongen en begeleid door koor, pittige drumsectie en bijpassend decor. Natuurlijk heeft ze altijd een paar momenten, waarbij je denkt; moest dat nummer nou? (” it’s my house” is wel een mooi nummer voor thuis, maar heeft niet de impact voor een concert zoals gisteren die niet gezongen nummers als “Reflections” of “No one gets the prize” zouden hebben gehad… Er viel overigens meer dan genoeg te genieten want “I’m still waiting”, “Love Hangover”, “Ease on down the road (#41 US Billboard)”, “You can’t hurry Love”, “Ain’t no mountain high enough”, The Boss en “Upside down” of “Chain reaction” waren een feest om in deze bezetting te horen van een vakvrouw in (gelukkig weer eens) topvorm. Wat weer niet had gehoeven was “I will survive” (dé gay classic, maar toch echt van Gloria Gay nor) met bijbehorende discobal…. of twee nummers van haar nagenoeg geflopte laatste I LOVE YOU album… terwijl ze kon kiezen uit meer dan 50 echte klassiekers!

Het was heerlijk om haar nog eens live te zien en te horen, hoewel sommige nummers draken zijn en blijven (zoals ” reach out…” ) en Endless love of You are everything met Alain een betere keus waren geweest, dan Endless love alleen zingen…. ze toch wel iets over haar vriend Michael had kunnen zeggen?! en anderzijds de toon luchtig was, waardoor er ook geen krokodillentranen waren (heb ik ook al eens vaker bij haar gezien….) kortom: een feestje. Dat ze voor de Nederlandse fans dan afsluit met ” Brand new day” was iets minder (single heeft in Nederland op #1 heeft gestaan 4 weken lang in 1979, terwijl men in thuisland Amerika na twee tegenvallende singlehits (You can’t win (#81) en Ease on down the road (#41) van The Wiz de single ‘Brand new day’ (geschreven door Luther Vandross) dit nummer als single ‘gewoon’ heeft overgeslagen…. (?). het nummer ‘Home’ van diezelfde film ligt haar meer, maar dat was weer geen nummer voor deze show….La Ross wilde er ook geen feestnummer meer van maken zoals het nog steeds op vele feestjes wel tot een halleluja stemming aanzet… Ze was moe aan het eind van het optreden. De levende legende had ze weer eens uit haar mouw geschud, mooi gedaan. En ook al had Brand new day de spectaculaire afsluiter moeten zijn. Diana deed daar niet helemaal meer haar best voor waardoor “Brand new day” gewoon het laatste nummer werd en niet de gewenste laatste knaller van een erg goede show.
English review (short): They can say whatever about Diana Ross: it’s not the greatest Soul voice of all time, it’s perhaps the biggest Soul STAR of all time (and a lot they say about her is a lie). Ever since she met Berry Gordy, with her big beautiful eyes… he saw that this one could be bigger than all Martha’s (from Vandellas) and Mary’s (from Shangri-la’s) together… so he placed her on a ‘higher’ and more central level within The Supremes, so she could SHINE… Well, she did and still does!! After all she’s been through (problems with collegues (Marvin Gaye… Shirley Bassey), heartaches, broken hearts, some alcohol, deaths, carreer drops) and all the good things too (being a good mother and true friend from Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson)… she still is, at 65 and grandmother… a big STAR, a great DIVA!
Diana in a favourite position
After a slow start which was not that impressive by the well talented Dutch singer Alain Clark, who got better after his first two tunes… but still: being the opening act for Diana Ross is not easy… She came down the stairs onto the great decorated stage and dazzled the audience with a great show and voice. Some NEW arrangements from mostly old classics, but goodies like; Stop!… You can’t hurry love and Ain’t no mountain high enough, The Boss… They sounded, with that great orchestra, splendid and still rockin’ and ALIVE ! One of the best songs was LOVE CHILD in a breathtaking version with two sides, starting the original one ending into a latin version… superb!!! With such a huge collection of hits i wondered why she sang ” It’s my house” which is a good ‘on the couch’ song, not a great BIG concert song…. but there was more than enough to enjoy… from ‘I’m still waiting’, ’till… ‘Love Hangover’ and from ‘Chain Reaction’ to Endless love (could have been a better duet with Alain Clark then his singalong in the boring version (no passion here, just routine) of ‘Reach out and touch’… (which never can replace the one (youtube) with Marvin to see in this review avbove).
She impressed with a good condition (gained a little weight, which is good), clear crystal voice, and again that (tacky?) DIVA dresses… and, just being the natural Diva she IS. Funny that she does the gay anthem ‘I will survive’ (it’s really Gloria Gay nor’s song) so much over the last decade… and her own Gay anthem ‘No one gets the prize’ is never heard live again…What should have been a highlight (also last song), because it was for 4 weeks on #1 in Holland in 1979….. was “Brand new day’ (written by Luther Vandross) from the Wiz movie…. It just wasn’t. It’s just not her song (HOME from that movie certainly is….) and this version was not that special… while the song is still a blast on parties to celebrate life… this version with a tired Diana at the end was ‘just’ the last song from a very good AND Unique concert… No tears, no talks about who she is missing… just compliments to the audience and singing. I liked it a lot !!
Inmiddels wat danspassen achter de rug deze zomer na 5daysoff met onvergetelijk HENRIK SCHWARZ optreden (feat Jesse Rose) in Melkweg, op de Zeedijk (erg leuk) met Gaypride, met Rapido on the beach (beetje bekend en meer van hetzelfde… maar met een zonnetje erbij is dansen op het strand wel erg fijn) én geslaagde Voltt loves Summer wat lekker was met goeie muziek en gelukkig (net) droog gehouden…..
En van Dance naar Peace (want het gaat er meestal erg liefdevol en vredig aan toe op de dansfeestjes….) is maar een kleine stap. Het is alweer zo lang geleden lijkt het en toch was het ook zo belangrijk, voor de ‘peace’ generation: WOODSTOCK !!!
Het is in 2009 40 jaar geleden dat een hele grote groep jongeren (bijna een half miljoen) de wereld liet zien dat LOVE and PEACE hand in hand konden gaan met muziek op het Woodstock Festival. Deze nazomer komt de film Taking Woodstock naar de bioscoop (regisseur Ang Lee, bekend van o.a Wedding Banquet en Brokeback Mountain) en tijdens de voorpremiere in Kriterion afgelopen vrijdag kon ik opgelucht adem halen: HIj is er weer in geslaagd om een mooie prent te maken van een schijnbaar klein detail, een magere verhaallijn die toch de hele sfeer en gevoel van de ‘late 60’s weergeven.
TAKING WOODSTOCK!
Imelda Staunton steelt de show als overijverige, maar soms beetje doorgeslagen (stereotype) joodse mama, maar het is erg leuk allemaal en een beetje losjes gemonteerd, niet te strak geregisseerd en het heeft oog voor een paar shots die je lang bijblijven omdat je wilt dat de wereld er zo!! uitziet, daarnaast fantastsch geacteerd!.

Het was dan ook een bijzondere ervaring in Kriterion afgelopen vrijdag, want de sfeer was erg goed, erg ‘cool’ goed. Je kon merken dat de muziekliefhebbers die er waren echte liefhebbers waren (die zullen overigens in meerderheid wellicht wel meer , CSN&Y, CCR, Hendrix, Joplin verwacht hebben in de film, maar daar gaat de film van Ang Lee niet over) en de love and peace sfeer is er een die de mijne is ook al ben ik net te jong om een echte hippie te kunnen zijn (ik ken er wel een paar gelukkig!)
Maar hopen dat de film een nieuwe generatie kan inspireren tot meer verdraagzaamheid , tolerantie en LOVE, GIVE PEACE A DANCE!!

Alle outfitjes bij elkaar is Voltt ook een soort Woodstock, maar dan wel iets meer doordacht dan toen…

dus die nonchelante look met zonnebril van minimaal D&G, Prada, Rayban.. gympen van minimaal Converse, Nike… shirts liefst zo ‘creatief’ mogelijk en natuurlijk gekke accessoires. Er IS heel erg over nagedacht, men is op z’n mooist in een ‘ eigen’ look (en feel…) Nou… helemaal lekker als dat in combinatie met veel vriendelijkheid kan en dat was het op Voltt! Een soort hip multisexi gezelschap waar een aantal vooroordelen niet lijken te bestaan en de love and peace… gemoedelijke lach en lekker dansen samen gaan met een knuffel of een blik van herkenning (lekker feessie). Je kon er fijn dansen en een drankje met hapje doen, maar de hoogtepunten waren toch TOM RUIJG (zie foto),BEAT PHARMACY, JAY BLISS, KABALE UND LIEBE én BROTHERS VIBE. Bij RICHIE HAWTIN (afsluiter) was het én te druk om nog te kunnen dansen én het geluid werd zo overstuurt dat het niet echt lekker klonk… én de set begon rommelig terwijl ik van de paar keer dat ik ‘m gezien heb een strakkere set gewend ben… Overigens vlogen de percussie geluiden ons om de oren toen we het nog net droog hielden rond 10 u na bijna 10 uur dansen… en twijfelden we nog effe om terug te gaan.
Alice en ik keken elkaar aan (moe en voldaan) en zeiden slim na de laatste cocktail: het was heerlijk! maar we zijn er ook klaar mee.
Culoe de Song (zuid Afrika) bleek al naam en faam te hebben, ondanks nog magere audio releases, met een bijna volle club Trouw. Het concert op Sonar in Barcelona (en ook filmpjes van hem in The Sugar Factory) gaven, naast zijn prachtige The bright Forest‘hit’ meer dan genoeg aanleiding om hem live te willen zien draaien! Bijna onder hypnose dwarrelde ik over de dansvloer van Club Trouw met zijn geweldige akoestiek. Als hij deze combinatie van ’sfeermelodieen’ met repeterende (vaak tribal achtige) beats op een hoog dansniveau weet te houden, dan wordt Culoe een aanrader voor grote feesten, waar hij het publiek onder voodoo invloeden op de dansvloer houdt! Heerlijk.
Culoe de Song (South Africa) After a stunning show in Barcelona on Sonar (and also in Sugar Factory earlier this year) and one big audio release The Bright Forest i was happy to hear him Live in club Trouw last week. His audio tune Bright Forest is a combination of Massive Attack’s unfinished Sympathy and tribal beats that make it danceable BIG TIME. The sound system there is great and i moved in a trance over the dancefloor to his music. If he keeps this vibe, he could become a real good DJ’s for the biggest parties to put a spell on the audience (a spell that dances)
5DAYSOFF!
Deze keer wil ik kort zijn over Jamie Lidell: hij is ontzettend getalenteerd en gezien zijn reputatie (grillig en onvoorspelbaar), waardoor je altijd weer een verrassingspakketje krijgt als je ‘m live ziet en hoort wist ik ook deze keer niet wat te verwachten (maar was zijn optreden in Paradiso vorig jaar erg mooi, soulvol en veel mooi gezongen nummers, weinig elektronisch gepiel en daardoor indrukwekkend). Deze keer viel het tegen omdat ruim 60% van zijn experimenten niet werkten of ongelukkige keuzes waren… Dat hij een waanzinnig mooie soulstem heeft staat buiten kijf en daar prachtballads en mooie gloedvolle Otis vibraties mee doorgeeft aan het publiek is heerlijk… maar gospel kan ie niet, moet ie niet doen… en minutenlang het publiek de tenen laten krommen met niet muzikaal elektronisch gepiel zorgen voor een verwijdering van het concert en connectie tussen publiek en artiest. Jammer, want het talent is groot en sommige nummers waren dat gisteren ook zoals Game for fools, Another Day en Rope of sand… Nou maar hopen dat Quincy Jones zegt: met jou ga ik als veteraan een jazzy soulplaat maken, dan kan Quincy de elektronica beheren (en beheersbaar houden) terwijl Jamie op de ‘mike’ kan uitblinken.
Short this time about Jamie Lidell: his voice is so soulful… you can feel the Otis spirit and vibes if you hear him sing… but why does this ‘wizz’ kid has to prove that he’s good with elektronic noise if it does not tribute anything to the songs? In a few songs it worked well (Rope of sand, Another day and Game for fools), but noise for noise reasons (60% of the eperiments) is the opposite of (how i discribe) Soul…. Hope Quincy Jones will produce his next album (jazzy soul) and controls the technique so Jamie can sing with his soul voice (which not can do gospel).

Dan… Tijdens het festival 5daysoff zou ik dan eindelijk een LIVE set (omdat ik al jaren fan ben van deze meester DJ, vooral na zijn twee LIVE DJ mix platen) gaan meemaken van Henrik (the Great) Schwarz…. (weliswaar met Jesse Rose, maar toch). Nadat het nogal wat tijd in beslag nam voordat de draaimeester aan de slag kon, vanwege techiek… en ik daardoor al bijna het gevoel kreeg dat de zo begeerlijke vibe er niet in zou zitten (na een niet overtuigend concert van Jamie Lidell) bij zijn draaien, zag ik dat Henrik er vrolijk onder bleef en die prachtige lach op die hele mooie kop van ‘m… en dat stelde gerust! Niet voor lang heb ik hoeven te twijfelen, omdat vanaf het moment dat hij startte met draaien (met collega Jesse Rose, die de FUNK in de dance, de hardsoul in de house en de samplewereld ook héél goed bleek te kennen) hij een energie en onstuimige draaikolk van stijlen wist te combineren met een altijd aanwezige ziel in zijn muziek (zonder de gebruikelijke breaks en opbouw van de vele collega DJ’s) maakten het dansen tot een waar en groot plezier (zijn mix van Bill Wither’s Who is he .. and what is he to You is meesterlijk en live nog beter dan op de plaat). Er was uren geen ontkomen aan: je moest gewoon doordansen. Hulpeloos werd er door partypeople’s gezocht naar moeheidsonderdrukkers of energie verlengers, terwijl de zuigende en hard pompende beats ons op de vloer hield tot laat.
Geweldig hoe hij ‘4′ met 7 en andere getallen maten weet te combineren zonder de draad van het ritmepatroon kwijt te raken. Het was een belevenis om op te dansen! Hij heeft een groot soulhart in zijn dansvingers en zijn energie werkt aanstekelijk. Een van de beste live performances van een knoppenman ooit!
Henrik smiles! (beautiful)
Henrik Schwarz is a favourite DJ from me since some years now. His LIVE record (with Lament and walk in my shoe) is one of the best mixing performances ever, so i was very exited to see the man performing LIVE this week. Allthough it was a combination with Jesse Rose (who knows about Funk and soul, and sampling too ) i was a bit nervous… because the expectations were high…
When it started way too late, i was even scared that it would not get the right vibe… but Henrik, already 25 minutes on stage without playing… kept his beautiful smile.
And when he started, with the complex beats (combinations of all kinds of music styles, like latin, reggea, dance, soul, funk) in a blender with always the pulse of a soul. I just could not resist the flow and for hours we remained on the dancefloor. While helpless people asked for ‘extension’ energy, we contuined to dance to this irresistable mix of happiness fo the feet. One of the best live DJ experiences EVER (upto now) I am a believer in dance with a soul…. he has a big one!
It’s 50 years since Berry Gordy took a loan from some family and frinds to start the legendairy MOTOWN label. It’s the label with music that insipred millions of other musicians and took the world into it’s arms with smooth balladas and irrisistable RnB… together with some soul clapping, the riffs and echo’s and… the recognizable beat, that stills thrills us!
I just had to make my own favourite MOTOWN top 50 list of singls and albums…. because 50 years, Motown is an inpiration for me too..
Het is in 2009 50 jaar geleden dat MOTOWN werd opgericht door Berry Gordy (meer hierover in het Aretha en Detroit stukje), maar ik zie zoveel verzamelaars uitkomen dit jaar om dat feit te vieren met steeds weer (teveel van) die stukgedraaide publiekslievelingen… Er is niets mis met Stevie’s “I just called to say i love you”, Lionel’s “Hello”, Diana’s “Endless Love”, Michael’s “One day in your life” of nog mierzoeter. want het publiek is er massaal dol op (millionsellers), maar het is niet beter of slechter dan een prachtige smartlap van ZZN of een Frans Bauer ballade. En daar is ook niks mis mee, want ik denk dat de smartlap de lach en traan van het hart zijn, country is dat vaak ook….. maar Soulmuziek de smartlap van de ziel. (Etta James, Ann Peebles, Millie Jackson, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, R. Kelly, John Legend, The Temptations, Rose Royce en vele anderen… ze zouden me allemaal gelijk geven met hun ballads als ze de prachtrijmen van onze taal zouden begrijpen én ze zich niet zouden verbazen over die zielloze melodie die er vaak onder zit in Nederlandse muziek… tja en dan ons hollandse ritme?! de uitvinders van De ‘vogeltjesdans’… niet echt een “Boogaloo” een “Mashed potatoo”, laat staan The Twist (hoe soulvol en opwindend was die niet met The Contours, Little Richard of Chubby Checker on the mike)!
Misschien is het dan toch wel genetisch bepaalt dat wij klompendansend ons leven werkend op of hangend rond het strand van Arnemuiden moeten doorbrengen, terwijl de SOUL -dansend door the streets (Detroit (Motown), Philadelphia (TSOP, Philly sound), NYC (salsoul en Puertorican soul), Stax records (Emotions, Isaac Hayes), Atlantic records (Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett), Talcum records (Joe Tex, James Purify, Three Degrees) James Brown, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway om er nog een paar te noemen… en in het diepe zuiden o.a Ike and Tina Turner ging in de USA en in Northern England (I ♡ MANCHESTER) van de wereld- was weggelegd voor mensen wiens oorsprong dansend op blote voeten ligt, zelfs bij de black roots onnavolgbare danspassen van Michael Jackson. (in de even een beetje overdrijven sfeer tenminste, want er is ook hele mooie oude en nieuwe ’soul’ van alle kleuren of kleurlozen zoals Jacques Brel of Serge Gainsbourg, Amalia Rodriques, Cesaria Evora, Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed, Carole King,Fela Kuti, jamie Lidell, Dusty Springfield, Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Marc Broussard en nog duizenden anderen) maar laten we het even hebben over muziek uit de tijd dat de opkomst van SOUL uit de trots die na een periode van ontkenning en onderdrukking kwam in Amerika. De tijd dat er nog volop discriminatie was in de muziek en Motown, Stax, Atlantic, James Brown, Sly Stone, Al Green en vele anderen daar wat aan deden of van mee profiteerden. De gloriedagen van de SOUL zoals we hem noemen. Geen Nu-Soul, geen hedendaagse R’nB, maar SOUL! Overigens is Soul natuurlijk maar ten dele de smartlap van de ziel, want het is ook het voer voor de dansvloer, de hypnotiserende klanken van James Brown, Stevie, Ray, Jackson 5, Martha Reeves, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Rufus, Pointer Sisters, Funkadelic, Parliament, Sly Stone, Tower of Power, E,W&F en o.a. The Supremes zijn nog steeds een feest oefening voor je spieren… Heerlijke hits van nog geen 3 minuten, lekker 3 kwartsmaatjes (behalve bij alles van George Clinton…) in een wervelende ton vol echo en background vocals. de soulclap, discobeat en FUNK RULED! Motown speciall heeft veel voor de popmuziek kunnen betekenen de afgelopen 50 jaar (het heeft zelfs Mick Jagger en David Bowie de afgrijselijke cover (maar wel een monsterhit) ‘Dancing in the streets’ opgebracht toen ze wat wilden bijverdienen. MOTOWN heeft meer dan een beetje mijn kijk op alle muziek beinvloed, Ik ben erdoor gekleurd!
Om toch mee te doen aan de lijstjes en tip /favourites/alltime best of’s… hieronder mijn favoriete 50 nummers van Motown én mijn favoriete 50 Motown cd’s (lp’s voor de liefhebbers), zonder kwaliteitsoordeel over de grootte van een hit, bekendheid van een artiest of de ‘noodzaak’ , ‘belang’ of ‘waarde’ van een nummer of cd. Dit zijn mijn MOTOWN favorieten. Gelukkig maar, want met nog meer platenmaatschappijen erbij betrekken zou het nog moeilijker zijn zo’n lijst te maken.

Marvin’s Sexual Healing zie ik ook wel eens op zo’n lijstje terwijl het geen Motown label nummer was. Laat staan al die mooie nummers die Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers of Gladys Knight, Diana Ross of Michael Jackson NA Motown opnamen… maar ook zoveel artiesten die eigenlijk een plek op de hitlijst aller tijden verdienen omdat ze één wereldhit bij Motown hadden zoals The Contours of Barrett Strong….
Eigenlijk kwam ik bij de selectie alweer tientallen nummers tegen die ook in mijn lijst horen… maar dat is het leuke van kiezen voor een positie: het moet.
